Emergency situations
If your dog may have eaten something dangerous, has eaten an unknown substance, or is showing concerning symptoms, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
If your dog is showing symptoms such as difficulty breathing, seizures, collapse, severe vomiting, unconsciousness or other serious symptoms, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.
Do not induce vomiting, give medication, activated charcoal or any home remedy, and do not wait to see what happens, unless a veterinary professional has specifically told you to. Contact your vet for advice.
What Is It For Dogs?
Is It For Dogs is an information service. You ask about a food, plant, drink, ingredient or other item your dog might come across, and we tell you what recognised veterinary and animal-safety sources say about it.
Every answer comes from a reviewed library of items rather than from an AI making up an answer on the spot. If we have not checked something yet, we say so.
Not veterinary advice
We are not a veterinary service, and nothing here is a diagnosis, a treatment plan or a substitute for advice from a qualified veterinary professional.
Use our answers to make informed decisions — then speak to your vet whenever you have a genuine concern about your dog's health.
Individual dogs are different
Risk depends on the dog in front of you: their size, age, breed, existing health conditions, allergies, any medication they take, and how much of the item they had.
An item classified as Safe is not necessarily suitable for every dog. If your dog has allergies, a sensitive stomach, a medical condition or a prescribed diet, check with your vet before introducing anything new.
Photo identification
Image recognition can be wrong, especially with plants, mushrooms and unlabelled foods that look alike. We show you what we think an item is and ask you to confirm it, and we refuse to give a classification when we are not confident.
Never rely on a photograph alone to decide whether something your dog has eaten is dangerous. Confirm the item with a qualified professional, or contact your vet.
How AI is used
AI helps us understand your question, work out which item you mean, match alternative names and spellings, and suggest what an item in a photograph might be.
AI does not decide whether something is safe. Classifications come from our reviewed library and the sources recorded against each item.

Safety information is reviewed against recognised expert, veterinary and animal-safety sources, and each item shows the sources actually used along with the date it was last reviewed.
